“Music is, to me, proof of the existence of God. It is so extraordinarily full of magic, and in tough times of my life I can listen to music and it makes such a difference.”
―Kurt Vonnegut
Music as Medicine and Therapy
In Social Sciences, the clinical practice of music therapy has been utilized for decades and continues to be a healing path for many. Now, under the scope of Neuroscience, Sound Therapy is being studied for its benefits in brain function and mental cognition. This paradigm shift has the potential to move music therapy from an adjunct method to a central treatment modality in rehabilitation and therapy.
Sound therapy treatment requires both active and passive participation. The client passively enters a relaxed state by laying down and slowing their breath. The body then responds by actively listening and responding at a cellular level, becoming more aware of the sounds and vibrational energy around them. This allows for an uplift in mood and decreased anxiety. Similarly to the focus found from mediation and mantra, sound becomes a bridge to stillness.
Sound is a wave form and is transmitted to the body through the air or directly through the skin. In some situations, singing bowls or tuning forks can be placed on the body at chakra points and rung. This practice allows for resonance to impact on deeper molecular level. Sound healing based on the chakra system can also be practiced by playing different instruments above or beside the client.
Awareness plays a huge role in healing. It plays a huge role for a healer, to be present while working, and for a client, to be aware of the body, breath, and sound around you. The task of the healer is to reveal the problem and offer correct methods to cure it.
How it Works?
Pets, Plants, People…and Pool Parties!
Sound Healing can be beneficial for a wide age range from early childhood development to late adulthood. It is important to know, you do not need to be ill or suffering beyond the normal human existence to see positive results from the receiving sound therapy. A session can reground and recharge a hectic work week, or be the resonance needed during recovery process. Elder care and prenatal practices vary differently, but hold the same care and intention.
In the era of the digital divide, smaller gatherings and retreats are incorporating Sound Therapy to bring deeper connection and new experiences. Corporate teams and Conventions have also become savvy to the self care of their employees, and holding Sound Baths and Healing Concerts in their offices.
Additionally, the work within prisons and mental institutions can be life affirming and some of the most rewarding. Especially, for the healer performing the work.
